Neck Lift in Beverly Hills

The neck is among the most visible areas of the body and most vulnerable to early signs of aging. Like the face, the neck has very delicate skin that can readily show the effects of the natural aging process, excess sun exposure, dramatic weight loss or genetic factors. Most often, these undesired symptoms appear as drooping, sagging or crepey skin that ages an individual’s appearance well beyond their years. Loose skin in the neck and jowls can also adversely affect the appearance of a person’s chin and profile, creating additional concerns that go beyond aging to impact one’s appearance and confidence.

If you have noticed the development of these concerns, and they have begun to bother you, you may want to consider the benefits a neck lift can provide. A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgery that can substantially improve aging symptoms in the neck. There are also non-invasive neck lift options that can address concerns that may not yet require surgery. A consultation with Beverly Hills’ premiere Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. David Mashhadian can quickly put any of your worries about these problems to rest. During your consultation, Dr. Mashhadian will create a personalized and comprehensive course of treatment that will minimize these aging signs and provide optimal and long-lasting rejuvenation.

What benefits does a neck lift offer?

A lower rhytidectomy, or neck lift, is a surgical procedure that can visibly improve aging signs in the neck, jowls, and jawline, providing clients with improved skin tone and profile definition and a much more youthful appearance.

During a neck lift procedure, your surgeon will reduce:

  • Excess fat and skin in the lower face which creates jowls
  • Excess fat underneath the chin
  • Loose neck skin and
  • Muscle banding in the neck, which may create abnormal contours

A neck lift focuses on achieving results below the jawline, but the procedure easily complements procedures such as a facelift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), brow lift, facial fat transfer or dermal filler treatment for clients who desire more facial rejuvenation.

Who makes a good neck lift candidate?

A candidate for a neck lift must be a good candidate for surgery in general. Patients must be in sound overall health, should not have issues with bleeding and must be able to tolerate general anesthesia. In addition, surgical candidates should quit smoking or not smoke several weeks before and after their surgery to increase their safety during the procedure and promote the healing process.

Candidates for a neck lift should have and wish to correct the following symptoms:

  • Loose or sagging skin in the neck and jawline
  • Excess fat underneath the chin creating a “double chin”
  • Aging symptoms in the neck area which a facelift cannot address

Candidates for any surgery should always have realistic expectations about the results the surgery can achieve and should be prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery to preserve and prolong their results.

What will happen during my neck lift procedure?

A neck lift is a safe and effective invasive procedure that will require general anesthesia in most cases. However, sedation and local anesthesia may be an option for some patients. As an experienced and technically skilled surgeon, Dr. Mashhadian is highly adaptable to the needs of each patient, so the details of the procedure may vary from patient to patient. For example, the excision of loose skin, fat removal, and muscle tightening are all available options when having a neck lift, but not all patients will require each of these components to achieve their optimal level of rejuvenation. The details of your procedure will be established during your consultation based on your stated goals and a full examination.

In most cases, Dr. Mashhadian will make incisions that begin in the natural folds of the ears and within the hairline of the sideburns. Locating the incisions in these areas will help conceal the scars, which are a natural component of every surgery and the healing process. If liposuction is required, Dr. Mashhadian will make another small incision under the chin to allow for the removal of excess fat. Skin excision is the most common aspect of a neck lift, since it can directly produce the smooth, taut skin which is the hallmark of a youthful neck and profile.

Muscle tightening is another technique frequently employed during a neck lift. Platysmal muscles that surround the neck may be brought closer together and tightened through the application of sutures that add further tone to this area, creating a taut foundation upon which neck tissues may be carefully repositioned. Muscle tightening, along with skin repositioning, ensures attractive contours and completes the client’s rejuvenated look. Once Dr. Mashhadian has completed all aspects of the surgery, he will suture the original incisions to complete the procedure and place bandages over the treatment area to minimize bruising and swelling; the bandages will also support the surgical area during recovery.

For those with milder aging symptoms in the neck area, Ultherapy is a great non-invasive option. Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared ultrasound treatment that can lift and tighten the foundational layers of the skin by promoting the skin’s collagen and elastin production. These two compounds that are naturally found in the skin provide the internal structures necessary to look youthful and vibrant once again. An Ultherapy treatment gently heats the underlying layers of the skin to increase collagen and elastin and is ideal for the treatment of the décolletage; the treatment also has no downtime. Clients may see results from Ultherapy in as little as two weeks and continue to experience improvements for up to six months. Overall results can last from 18 months to two years depending on the patient. For patients who have had a neck lift and wish to maintain their results, Ultherapy is also an excellent procedure to increase the longevity of your neck lift even years later.

What is recovery from a neck lift like?*

Tightness around your incisions, mild to moderate pain, and swelling and bruising are all common and natural side effects of surgery, but they are factors that your surgeon, Dr. Mashhadian, will well prepare you for before recovery. First of all, compression bandages and a natural herbal formulation will help minimize the bruising and swelling you will experience. You will also receive detailed instructions on how to prepare your home for recovery prior to your surgery, and you will be instructed on how to protect and care for your incisions while you heal.

The first two weeks at home are often the most challenging for patients recovering from a neck lift, but Dr. Mashhadian’s proprietary Recovery EXL technique will greatly reduce the amount of downtime you will experience. During this time, you will need to sleep upright to help reduce swelling, and you will also need to avoid twisting motions to prevent straining the healing incisions. Dissolvable sutures will resolve themselves after about 10 days, and your surgeon will remove any non-dissolvable sutures around this time as well.

Incisions will continue to fade over the next 12 to 18 months, but since they are well-hidden by the hairline and natural folds of the ear, they will not be visible or detract from your results. After the first two weeks, most clients will return to work if they feel comfortable doing so, and they may also resume most light activities, although exercise and more vigorous activities will need to wait until five or six weeks after surgery. A full recovery can take as long as eight weeks; however, the rate of recovery will depend on the individual patient and the extent of their procedure.

How will RECOVERY EXL make my neck lift recovery easier?

Dr. David Mashhadian of Rodeo Surgical Art has developed a proprietary technique called Recovery EXL, which allows patients to enjoy a significantly more comfortable and speedy recovery than having surgery anywhere else. Most of our patients are able to entirely forego prescription pain medication, allowing them to enjoy their recovery process without any negative side effects. Recovery EXL combines unique, pre-operative medications with specialized incisions during surgery to offer clients advantages during their recovery they cannot have when they have their neck lift performed by other surgeons. Clients can only have this technique performed by its creator, Dr. David Mashhadian, at Rodeo Surgical Art.

What results can I expect from my neck lift?*

Swelling and redness are natural, initial side effects of neck lift surgery; however, these symptoms will quickly subside during the initial weeks of recovery, and the first glimpses of your results will then start to appear. While your full results will only come to light between three and six months, you will already see substantial differences in the tone of your neck and jowls as well as an improved profile and clearer contours in the neck and jawline.
