Breast Implant Placement
Many women find that they feel more pride and self-confidence after breast augmentation. For our Beverly Hills patients who are dissatisfied with the look and feel of their breasts because of the effects of age, pregnancy or nursing, or their own personal reasons, breast implants are an excellent option.
In preparation for your procedure, you will need to make several choices regarding the type of implant, the size of implant, and of course the placement of your breast implants. In consultation with Dr. David Mashhadian, you will decide which implant placement option best serves your lifestyle and the results you want to achieve.
With subglandular placement, the implant is placed behind the breast tissue and in front of the pectoral muscle. Advantages of the subglandular placement include:
- Implants are easier to place
- You’ll see more dramatic results, including more sharply defined cleavage
- Less discomfort during the recovery process
The disadvantages of this placement include:
- Greater risk of sagging
- Increased risk of capsular contracture
- Rippling will be visible
- Implant is more visible
Subpectoral and Submuscular
In a submuscular placement, the breast implant is placed behind the pectoral muscle. The advantages of submuscular placement are:
- Decreased risk of sagging over time
- More natural looking
- Reduced risk of capsular contracture
- Implant is less visible
The disadvantages include:
- More difficult to place
- Limitations on size of implants
- Longer recovery
The most common placement used by surgeons in the U.S. is the subpectoral placement, which places the implant below the muscle, but releases inferior muscular attachments. Total muscle coverage is achieved in the submuscular placement without releasing inferior muscles. This placement is usually reserved for breast reconstruction surgeries.
You will make this decision in close consultation with Dr. Mashhadian, who will walk you through the breast augmentation procedure and explain the risks and advantages of each option.
