What is Bellafill?
Bellafill, formerly referred to as Artecol in Europe and Artefill in the United States, was approved by the FDA in 2006 for the reduction of nasolabial folds. These creases that are also known as smile lines extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth and can become quite ingrained in the skin. Bellafill is injected just under the skin’s surface, where it provides support the skin needs to erase lines and creases and produce a more youthful appearance.
Bellafill is created from bovine collagen that contains polymethylmethacrylate, or PMMA. The bovine collagen provides immediate support in the dermal structure, providing you with a smoother look that you can see right away. At the same time, the PMMA microspheres are non-absorbable, creating a matrix in the underlying dermal layers that your body’s natural collagen can adhere to as it is produced. The non-absorbable nature of the microspheres allows the positive results of your Bellafill injections to last much longer than other dermal fillers available today.

With Bellafill, since the microspheres in the formulation are not absorbed by the body, a single treatment may last for up to five years. Procedure and Recovery*
Patients undergoing Bellafill injections for the first time will need to have an initial collagen skin test to ensure there are no allergic reactions to the bovine collagen. If the skin test goes well, we can proceed with your Bellafill treatment, which only takes a few minutes to complete. Because Bellafill contains an anesthetic, you should not feel much – if any – discomfort during your injections.
You will be able to continue your daily routine right away since this procedure does not require any downtime. You may experience mild swelling or redness around the injection sites after your treatment, but these side effects are likely to improve within a few days. Other complications are extremely rare. For example, a tiny percentage of patients may notice some lumps and bumps after their Bellafill injections, but these usually resolve on their own.
Results that Last for Years*
Because of the collagen in the Bellafill mix, you may see positive results with your treatment the same day as your session. Some patients may decide to have a second set of Bellafill injections about six weeks after the first to enhance their positive results. Once those results are achieved, they will last a very long time. Studies have shown a high patient satisfaction rate even five years after treatment in many cases.
